In Fall 2008 I was contacted by Tacoma Museum of Glass who were interested in running a student competition to design contemporary objects for their museum store collection. This project was run as an external project (outside of the curriculum and in addition to my teaching load).

Competition Brief:

Design a functional object, unique to the Museum of Glass, that is smaller than a breadbox and made in clear and/or color glass. Object can be solid or hollow, sculpted, blown, or cast in sand. It should be reasonably priced and preferably retail for under $1000, with $100 - $500 being ideal. Winning design will be produced in Limited Edition of 500 and sold in the Museum of Glass Store.

Over 40 students brought concepts to the first design review, and approximately 20 developed their ideas for a second review. 15 final concepts were sent to Tacoma for consideration and they choose 3 finalists who went out to Tacoma for a week to produce working prototypes fabricated by the talented glass artists who work in the Museum's amazing Hot Shop.

From these prototypes Chin-Yu Fu's lantern project was selected for a production run. These unique objects will be available in the Museum of Glass store and in the Modern Wing Store at the Art Institute of Chicago.

The wonderful finalists included Evan Walsh, Erin Lebens, Greta Stepp and Chin-yu Fu.
